Student Artwork Collection Project: Home

The Student Artwork Collection is an ongoing project started in Fall 2023 by Blue Ridge Community College Archive. The project's goal is to work collaboratively with the art department to collect, describe, and preserve examples of student artwork.

Welcome to the Project!

The Blue Ridge Community College Archive started a new project during the Fall 2023 semester focused on collecting, describing, and preserving student artwork. The project is ongoing for as long as there is faculty and student interest and is open to all art classes and independent study students. Blue Ridge Community College offers art classes for a variety of mediums, and we want to help preserve their work by digitizing students' art projects. This will allow future students and community members to see and interact with our students' art for years to come as well as give our students a way to permanently display their art.

The library on the Henderson Campus displays artwork done by current and past students, but through this project we hope to preserve the artwork as well as the students' perspective on their artistic journey. Students who wish to participate in the project will help shape the description of their art in our records, and their interviews will serve as a way for future audiences to connect with the art in a way they might not be able to otherwise.

Outlined below is the project's structure, faculty time commitment, and student time commitment. Do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions!

Project Structure

  1. Archivist is willing to present the project to different art classes and answer any questions.
  2. Students can sign-up for the project (see Forms tab) or contact the Archivist directly.
  3. Students need to bring the artwork they wish to have digitized to the library.
    1. Students will be asked to fill out a deed of gift form for their participation and the digitization.
    2. Students who are open to participating in interviews will be sent an appointment calendar to book their session(s).
  4. Archivist will create catalog entries and metadata for each artwork.
    1. Entries will include the digital image or link for the art, the descriptive information for each artwork, descriptive tags for discoverability, and a connecting link to the accompanying audio interview.
  5. Artwork description will be finished and posted to the online repository. Students will be notified when their art is live online.

Faculty Commitment

For faculty interested in having their classes participate in the project:

  • Reach out to Rachel Quinn to set up a time for her to come by your classroom to speak to students about the project and answer any questions.
  • Time allotment for presentation/questions: 30 minutes

Student Commitment

For students interested in participating in the project:

  • Navigate to the Forms Tab and sign-up for the project or contact Rachel Quinn directly (will take ~1 minute)
  • After selecting which artworks you would like to include in the project, you will either submit a digital copy of your art (for digital art, videography, and photography) or request a digitization appointment (see Forms Tab) with the Archivist in the library. The appointment form will take less than 5 minutes to complete.
    • Digitization for each artwork will take between 5-10 minutes depending on the size and complexity of the art. Additional time might be needed depending on the need for retakes. The information students submit with their appointment form will help us set up the right equipment for their art.
      • Types of equipment:
        • Two flatbed scanners
        • ScanSnap (for more textured/3D art and smaller canvases)
        • Shadow box for sculptures and ceramics
        • Nikon D3500 DSLR Camera for any art too big for our other equipment
  • After digitizing the art, students who are interested will schedule an appointment with the Archivist to record their brief interview(s).
    • Each artwork receives its own interview session.
    • Each interview will take between 5-15 minutes depending on how in-depth students want to be with their descriptions.
    • Students will discuss their interpretation of their art, their creative process, what mediums were used, which class the art was made in, and themselves as artists.
    • Before arriving for their appointment, it is recommended that each student download the interview questions (see the Forms Tab) to help them think about what they want to highlight during their interview.

*There might be additional time commitments for students coming from the Transylvania Campus. If commuting to the Henderson Campus is a barrier for students wanting to participate in the project, reach out to Rachel Quinn to see about accommodations.
